We are in the midst of a mental health crisis
In 2022, Darien lost two young members of our community to suicide. Many of us have lost friends and relatives to suicide and it is time for us to end the stigma associated with mental illness. Stigma breeds shame and isolation and prevents people from connecting with loved ones about how they feel. By encouraging open, honest, and informed conversations, we will be saving lives.
In honor of May Mental Health Awareness Month, The Corbin District is supporting multiple events that will spark the kinds of conversations that our community desperately needs.
You Are Not Alone Murals--a public art project consisting of 65+ murals around the world that encourages dialogue about mental illness and offers a message of hope--and local muralist Brian Kaspr are creating a massive mural that says “you are not alone” in the project’s signature colors of yellow, black, white, and gray. Painting will take place on May 1st and 2nd at 1120 Boston Post Road (the building formerly occupied by Bank of America).
There will be a community event to follow at the site May 6th from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.
You Are Not Alone Murals and Kaspr will be back in our area this September in honor of Suicide Prevention Month to paint several new murals and further engage our community.
Also, on May 6th from 10 am to 1 pm, the Darien Youth Commission is hosting an event with students to paint downtown storefronts in support of the youth-led Yellow Tulip Project whose mission is to smash the stigma associated with mental illness.
